BEUDIN, CORNEILLE. - Jesuit missionary, b. at Gravelines (now in French Flanders, then in the Catholic Netherlands) in 1615, d. for the faith at Papigochic (Mexico) on June 4, 1650. Having entered the Society of Jesus at Malines in 1635, he reached the mission of New Spain in 1647, taking the name Godinez. His apostolate was short-lived. Sent to the Tarahumara, he could not win over the minds of the Indians, who were exasperated by the abuses of the Spanish conquerors and colonists. In an uprising, the missionary, held guilty also of causing people to die through the administration of the last Sacraments, was killed by arrows in the present-day state of Chihuahua. The B. is said to have composed a Mexican-Tarahumara grammar and lexicon, which have not been found.
