BIBLISCHE ZEITSCHRIFT. - A journal of biblical studies, published from 1903 by the Herder publishing house in Friburgo in Brisgovia, in connection with the Biblische Studien, a series of monographs begun in 1896 under the editorship of O. Bardenhewer. It was edited by Professors Göttsberger and Sickenberger, and normally appeared in four issues each year until 1915. Thereafter, owing to the difficulties created by the First World War and its consequences, it was reduced to one volume every two or three years; with volume 19 (years 1930–31) it passed to another publisher (Schöningh, Paderborn) and to another editorial direction (Professors Walde and Freundorfer), while still maintaining the same programme, until its publication was suspended by the Second World War. Its value, more than in its leading articles, however distinguished, lay in the «Bibliographische Notizen» (which soon, also because of their extent, occupied the greater part of the volume), an orderly and most accurate list of current publications on biblical subjects, generally with a summary account of the contents of each, and sometimes also a critical judgment: a most useful source of information, which has hitherto had no equal in its kind.
