JOSEPH SICKENBERGER. - Catholic exegete, born at Kempten (Bavaria) on 19 March 1872, died at Kitzbichel on 27 March 1945.
He pursued theological studies in Munich (1891–96), where his teacher was O. Bardenhewer (q.v.). Ordained priest in 1896, he served as vicar at the Campo Santo Teutonico (q.v.) in Rome from 1896 to 1898, devoting himself to Christian archaeology. In 1900 he earned his doctorate in Munich with the thesis *Titus von Bostra. Studien zu dessen Lukashomilien*, published in the series *Texte und Untersuchungen* (Leipzig 1901). With another dissertation, *Die Lukaskatene des Niketas von Herakleia*, accepted and included in the same series (Leipzig 1902), he qualified as a *Privatdozent* in New Testament exegesis in Munich, where in the same year he was appointed extraordinary professor of patrology and Christian archaeology.
