BILYCHNIS

BILYCHNIS. - A monthly journal of religious studies, published in Rome from 1912 to 1930 (the emblem, the b., a lamp from the Roman catacombs with a double wick and a bipartite flame, was meant to symbolize the union of faith and science). Promoted by the theological faculty of the Baptist seminary, it was always published under the name of the director Ludovico Paschetto and the foreign editor D. B. Whittinghill, but the actual editor, especially in the last decade, was Giovanni Costa (born Catholic and never converted to Protestantism). The collaboration was eclectic, opening widely to variously oriented writers: Protestants of different denominations, modernists, Jews, and independent lay scholars. B. thus went beyond the limits of confessionalism; yet it often echoed doctrinal controversies with heated tones. Under the same name of B., a publishing house disseminated various publications.
