Bogdani, Pietro

BOGDANI, PIETRO. - Born around 1630, died in 1688, first bishop of Shkodër (Albania), then archbishop of Skopje. Author of the Cuneus prophetarum de Christo saltatore mundi et eius evangelica veritate, published in a parallel Italian and Albanian text at Padua (seminary press, 1685). It is a kind of apologetics drawn from the Old and New Testaments and from the usual sources employed in his age, with special attention to the errors of the time and to those of the Muslims, to whom B.'s country was then subject. The importance of the work, however, lies in its having been, until beyond the middle of the 19th century, the only large-scale work in the Albanian language, which, in B.'s text, is used with literary grace and possesses a notable richness.
