BOGDANI, PIETRO. – Born c. 1630, died in 1688, bishop first of Scutari (Albania), then archbishop of Skopje. Author of *Cuneus prophetarum de Christo salvatore mundi et eius evangelica veritate*, published in parallel Italian and Albanian text at Padua (seminary press, 1685). It is a kind of apologetics drawn from the Old and New Testaments and the usual sources of his age, with special regard to the errors of the time and those of the Muslims, to whose dominion the country of B. was then subject. The importance of the work, however, lies in its having been, until well beyond the mid-19th century, the only major work in the Albanian language; in B.’s text, Albanian is used with literary skill and shows notable richness.
