BRIDEL, BEDRICH. – Bohemian Jesuit, b. in 1619, d. at Kutná Hora in 1680. He translated various ascetical works into Czech, but is especially remembered today for his religious poetry in the Czech language, which makes him a significant representative of “Baroque” Bohemian literature. B. was brought back into prominence by the Slavic scholar Msgr. J. Vašica, who republished his principal poems in Prague from 1931 to 1939, with historical and literary commentary.
