BRIDEL, BEDRICH

BRIDEL, BEDŘICH. - Bohemian Jesuit, b. in 1619, d. at Kutná Hora in 1680. He translated various ascetic works into Bohemian, but is especially remembered in our days for his religious poems in the Czech language, which make him a significant representative of Bohemian "baroque" literature. B. was brought back into prominence by the Slavist Msgr. J. Vašica, who republished his principal poems in Prague, from 1931 to 1939, with historical and literary commentary.
