BRIET, PHILIPPE

BRIET, PHILIPPE. – French Jesuit, b. at Abbeville in 1601, d. in Paris in 1668. He entered the Society in 1619 and taught rhetoric for many years, chiefly in Paris. He published a continuation of O. Torsellini’s Historiae ab origine mundi epitome (Paris 1658) and composed an Annales mundi seu chronicon universale (7 small volumes, Paris 1662–63, with several reprints). But his geographical work is of greater value: Parallela geographiae veteris et novae (Abbeville 1648–49, 3 vols., the third of which concerns Italy; vols. IV–VI, on Asia and Africa, are preserved in manuscript in the National Library of Paris); Théâtre géographique de l'Europe (Paris 1653, an atlas of 60 maps).
