BRIET, PHILIPPE. - French Jesuit, b. at Abbeville in 1601, d. at Paris in 1668. Having entered the Society in 1619, he taught rhetoric for many years, chiefly at Paris. He published a continuation of O. Torsellini's Historiae ab origine mundi epitome (Paris 1658) and composed an Annales mundi seu chronicon universale (7 small volumes, Paris 1662-63, several reprints). But of greater value is his geographical work: Parallela geographiae veteris et novae (Abbeville 1648-49, 3 vols., of which the third deals with Italy; vols. IV-VI, on Asia and Africa, are preserved in manuscript in the National Library of Paris): Théâtre géographique de l'Europe (Paris 1653, an atlas of 60 maps).
