BRIET, PHILIPPE

BRIET, Philippe. - French Jesuit, b. at Abbeville in 1601, d. at Paris in 1668. He entered the Society in 1619 and taught rhetoric for many years, mainly in Paris. He published a continuation to the *Historiae ab origine mundi epitome* of O. Torsellini (Paris 1658) and composed an *Annales mundi seu chronicon universale* (7 small volumes, Paris 1662-63, various reprints). But of greater value is his geographical work: *Parallela geographiae veteris et novae* (Abbeville 1648-49, 3 vols., the third on Italy; vols. IV-VI on Asia and Africa are preserved in manuscript in the Bibliothèque Nationale in Paris); *Théâtre géographique de l'Europe* (Paris 1653, an atlas of 60 maps).
