BRETONVILLIERS, ALEXANDRE LE RAGOIS de. — French Sulpician, b. in Paris in 1621 and d. there in 1676, a disciple of the Venerable Olier, whom he succeeded in the parish of S. Sulpice (1653) and in the government of the Congregation (1657). Heir to his brother’s fortune, he spent large sums to save the struggling colony of Montreal in Canada by purchasing the island of Montreal in the name of S. Sulpice. He drew up the statutes of the Congregation with the help of Tronson. In 1671 he made a pilgrimage to Rome and Loreto.
He left manuscripts including a Journal spirituel on his own inner life, Mémoires on the life of the Venerable Olier (one of the sources of Tronson’s Esprit de Mr. Olier), and a Vie de Mr. Olier, of which only extracts were published.
