BRJANČANINOV, IGNATIJ. - Ascetic and Russian mystic, b. 1807, d. 1867. Of aristocratic family, he was first a military engineer, later became a monk and was abbot in a monastery near St. Petersburg; subsequently he was a dissenting bishop of Kostroma and the Caucasus. Of profoundly mystical nature, he became well known in Russia at the time for his ascetic writings. Among these we mention in particular the *Saggi ascetici*, published in St. Petersburg in 4 vols. between 1865 and 1867.
