BRJANČANINOV, IGNATIJ. – Russian ascetic and mystic, born in 1807, died in 1867. Of aristocratic family, he was first a military engineer; later he became a monk and abbot in a convent near Petersburg; subsequently he was a dissident bishop of Kostroma and the Caucasus. A profoundly mystical nature, he became very well known in Russia at the time for his writings on asceticism. Among them, we mention particularly the Ascetic Essays, published in Petersburg in 4 vols. between 1865 and 1867.
