BRJANČANINOV, IGNATIJ. - Russian ascetic and mystic, b. in 1807, d. in 1867. Of an aristocratic family, he was first a military engineer, afterwards became a monk and became abbot in a monastery near St. Petersburg; subsequently he was a dissident bishop of Kostroma and of the Caucasus. A profoundly mystical nature, he became quite well known in the Russia of his time for his writings of an ascetic character. Among them we mention in particular the Ascetic Essays, published in St. Petersburg in 4 vols. between 1865 and 1867.
