BUCCELLI, DOMENICO MAURIZIO. - Piarist educationalist, b. in Venice on 22 Sept. 1788, d. in Ovada on 18 March 1842 in the odor of sanctity. Left an orphan, he received a harsh upbringing. As a young man he dedicated himself to the Piarists (Scuole pie), where he wished to provide for the improvement of both pupils and educators.
In the college of Carcare, supported by Fr. Carosio, where he taught letters for 28 years, B. introduced the first school of the vernacular language, six years before it was required by law in Piedmont; he proposed a method of language instruction of easy induction which he printed in '24 under the title Ragion della lingua, a work commented on by Cherubini and Lambruschini but opposed in government circles for political reasons. With his "intermediate" school B. gave young people a pleasant scholastic aspect and sought to develop a precocious intellect. He banished Arcadian trivialities from the schools and replaced them with tests of ingenuity for the young. He spent his last years in Ovada, giving examples of charity for the hospital and of sacrifice for the young.
