Cecchi, Filippo

CECCHI, FILIPPO. - Piarist physicist, b. at Ponte Buggianese (Pistoia) on 31 May 1822, d. at Florence on 1 May 1887.

He taught physics and mathematics in Florence for over forty years, succeeding, upon the death of Fr. Antonelli, as director of the Observatory, to which he gave a meteorological and also geodynamic orientation. The geodynamic activity, in fact, which he initiated, brought the Observatory of S. Giovannino to a degree of eminence above the other similar observatories, not only in Italy, but abroad.

In the field of seismography he had singular merits, for which at the Turin exhibition he was awarded a gold medal. In meteorology he left notable instruments, among which the barometer and the thermometer bearing his name, and he was unable to finish a meteorograph.
