In 1900 he was transferred to Marburg, where, retired in 1921, he died on 29 January 1935. All his works advocate the most radical documentary criticism: *Die Bücher der Richter und Samuel* (Giessen 1890); *Das Buch Hiob* (Göttingen 1896, 2nd ed., ibid. 1913); *Buch der Richter* (Freiburg im Br. 1897); *Das Hohelied erklärt. Die Klagelieder erklärt* (Freiburg, Leipzig, Tübingen 1898); *Religion des Volkes Israel* (Giessen 1900, 2nd ed., ibid. 1912: *Altisraelitische Religion*); *Ebed-Zubredieder* (ibid. 1900); *Die Bücher Samuel* (Tübingen 1902); *Geschichte der althebräischen Literatur* (2nd ed., Leipzig 1909); a list of all B.'s works is found in K.
