BUDDE, KARL. - Protestant theologian, b. 23 Apr. 1850 at Bensberg (Cologne); in 1873 Privatdozent, in 1879 associate professor of the Old Testament at Bonn, and in 1889 full professor at Strasbourg. In 1900 he was transferred to Marburg, where, after retiring in 1921, he died on 29 Jan. 1935. He is one of the principal representatives of the early Wellhausen school, whose theories he was the first to popularize in his Biblische Urgeschichte (Giessen 1883).
