CANCER de BARBASTRO, LUIS. — One of the most distinguished Las Casas (v.), b. at Barbastro in Aragon (date unknown) and d. at Tampa Bay (Florida) in 1549, killed by the indigenous people. With Las Casas he went to Peru and then to Guatemala, and together with him returned to Spain in 1539 to obtain new missionary confrères. In 1546 he took part in the conference of theologians convened in Mexico by the visitator Tallo de Sandoval for the study of the Indian question; the following year he travelled once more to Spain, where he obtained permission to undertake the mission of Florida, adopting the method proposed by Las Casas. But, having returned to America (1549) with five other confrères, on the coasts of Florida, he was betrayed by the interpreter and killed together with all of them.
