CALLES, SIGISMUND. – Jesuit, Austrian historian, b. at Aspach on 12 March 1695, d. in Vienna on 3 January 1761. He donned the habit of the Society in 1711 and was professor of history at the University of Vienna (1738–46), then a writer in the same city until his death.
His principal works are the Annales Austriae (up to 1300, 2 vols., Vienna 1750) and the Annales ecclesiastici Germaniae (up to the 12th century, 6 vols., ibid. 1756–69). He also published the Series Mismensium episcoporum of his confrère Antonio Steyrer (ibid. 1752). A skilled critic, he discovered various historical falsifications.
