CALLES, SIGISMUND. - Jesuit, Austrian historian, b. at Aspach on 12 March 1695, d. at Vienna on 3 Jan. 1761. He entered the habit of the Society in 1711, was professor of history at the University of Vienna (1738-46), then a writer in the same city until his death.
His principal works are the Annales Austriae (down to 1300, 2 vols., Vienna 1750) and Annales ecclesiastici Germaniae (down to the 12th century, 6 vols., ibid. 1756-69). He also published the Series Mismensium episcoporum of his confrere Antonio Steyrer (ibid. 1752). A capable critic, he discovered various historical forgeries.
