CALLES, SIGISMUND. - Jesuit, Austrian historian, born at Aspach on 12 March 1695, died at Vienna on 3 January 1761. He entered the Jesuit order in 1711, was professor of history at the University of Vienna (1738-46), and thereafter a writer in the same city until his death.
His principal works are the *Annales Austriae* (up to 1300, 2 vols., Vienna 1750) and *Annales ecclesiastici Germaniae* (up to the 12th century, 6 vols., 1756-69). He also published the *Series Misenensim episcoporum* by his confrere Antonio Steyrer (ibid. 1752). A skilled critic, he exposed various historical forgeries.
