CALLEGARI, GIUSEPPE. - Cardinal, b. 4 Nov. 1841 in Venice, d. 14 Apr. 1906 in Padua. Ordained a priest in 1864, he was a teacher of grammar and literature, as well as of moral theology in the patriarchal seminary. A man of action by temperament, he took an interest in Catholic associations from the outset and took part in Catholic congresses, beginning with the first one held in Venice in 1874. Raised at a still young age (in 1880) to the episcopal dignity, he first governed the see of Treviso, from which he was transferred to Padua. Together with Card. Riboldi, he was president of the Società scientifica dei cattolici italiani.
Of strong intellect and broad culture, he was mindful of the need to combat the spreading materialism, demonstrating that a fruitful union can exist between reason and faith, and that the Church herself can point out the paths to a regeneration of society. On various occasions he promoted gatherings of Catholic scholars, in which the problems of the hour were debated, with particular regard to social questions. On 9 Nov. 1903 Pius X created him cardinal of the title of S. Maria in Cosmedin.
