ANTONIO MARIA CAMPANELLA. — Born in Genoa on 2 March 1811, died there on 23 March 1910. After being ordained a priest, he taught sacred eloquence at the archiepiscopal seminary of his native city and became one of the most combative exponents of the Catholic press after 1848, directing for several years the newspaper Il Cattolico.
Devoted to the cause of Pius IX, he opposed the work of Archbishop Charvaz when the latter appeared too accommodating to the liberal principles of the Sardinian state. He published a Lettera al reverendo signor Enrico Ternia, canon of the Metropolitan Church of Genoa, author of the biography of the late Archbishop Andrea Charvaz (Genoa 1871).
