Campaña, Pedro

CAMPAÑA, PEDRO. - Painter, b. in Brussels in 1503 and d. there in 1580. His real name was Kempeneer and he was probably a pupil of Bernard Van Orley.

In Bologna, in 1529, he painted a triumphal arch for the coronation of Emperor Charles V, and in Rome and in Venice he was in the service of Cardinal Grimani. Having moved to Andalusia, where he worked from 1548 to 1563, in the cathedral of Seville he painted the Mariscal chapel and left other works in the churches of St. Isidore, St. Catherine, and St. Juan de la Palma, but his most famous work is the Descent from the Cross in S. Cruz, much admired also by Murillo.
