CACCINI, GIOVANNI BATTISTA. - Sculptor and architect, born probably in Firenze on 24 Oct. 1556 and died there in 1612 or ’13.
A pupil of Gio. Ant. Dosio, he left the greatest traces of his activity in Firenze; noteworthy are the statues of Sts. Bartolomeo and Zanobi in S. Maria Maggiore (1584), of Peace and Meekness (1606) in the Strozzi chapel at S. Trinita, of Summer and Autumn on the bridge of S. Trinita, and those in the Boboli garden. As an architect he continued the construction of the external portico of the church of the S.ma Annunziata in Firenze, and built beside it the chapel of S. Sebastiano. Also in Firenze, the elaborate tabernacle of the high altar of S. Spirito is his work. He also worked in Pisa (reliefs of the bronze portal in the Duomo), in Orvieto, and in Napoli.
