CACCINI, GIOVANNI BATTISTA. - Sculptor and architect, b. probably in Florence on 24 Oct. 1556 and d. there in 1612 or '13.
A pupil of Gio. Ant. Dosio, he left in Florence the greatest traces of his activity; we may recall the statues of Sts. Bartholomew and Zenobius in S. Maria Maggiore (1584), of Peace and Meekness (1606) in the Strozzi chapel at S. Trinita, of Summer and Autumn on the Ponte di S. Trinita, and those in the Boboli garden. As an architect he continued the construction of the outer portico of the church of the Santissima Annunziata in Florence, and built, beside it, the chapel of St. Sebastian. To him is due, also in Florence, the cumbersome ciborium of the high altar of S. Spirito. He also worked in Pisa (reliefs of the bronze portal in the Cathedral), in Orvieto and in Naples.
