CACCINI, GIOVANNI BATTISTA. — Sculptor and architect, probably born in Florence on 24 Oct. 1556 and died there in 1612 or ’13.
A pupil of Gio. Ant. Dosio, he left in Florence the most significant traces of his activity; we may recall the statues of Sts. Bartholomew and Zanobius in S. Maria Maggiore (1584), of Peace and Meekness (1606) in the Strozzi chapel at S. Trinita, of Summer and Autumn on the Ponte di S. Trinita, and those in the Boboli Gardens. As an architect he completed the external portico of the church of the Santissima Annunziata in Florence and built beside it the chapel of S. Sebastian. Also in Florence he executed the elaborate ciborium of the high altar of S. Spirito. He also worked at Pisa (reliefs on the bronze portal of the Duomo), at Orvieto, and at Naples.
