CAPORALI, BARTOLOMEO. — Painter, born in Perugia ca. 1420 and died in 1504 or 1505. Initially a follower of Benozzo Gozzoli, he later drew closer to his Umbrian contemporaries, revealing the influence of the art of Piero della Francesca, while in his later works he ended up being drawn into the orbit of Pinturicchio.
Besides the polyptych executed in 1467 in collaboration with Bonfigli for the church of S. Domenico (gallery of Perugia), among his works worthy of note are: the frescoes in the chapel of S. Antonio in Deruta (1480), the Pietà (1486), in the cathedral of Perugia, the fresco with the Madonna and various saints in the church of Monte l'Abate; from 1401 is the fresco of S. Francesco in Montone, a clear proof of the versatility of his art. — See Pl. XLVI.
