BONFIGLI, BENEDETTO. - Painter, b. in Perugia c. 1420 and d. there in 1496. He was one of the principal representatives of the 15th-century Umbrian school. He is mentioned for the first time in 1445; in 1450 he painted in Rome, at the Vatican; in 1453 he was again in Perugia.
Trained on the examples of the Tuscan masters, he fused the influences of B. Gozzoli and of Angelico while always preserving a precious Gothic linearism derived from the Sienese Domenico di Bartolo. He nevertheless has an originality of his own: a limpid narrative vein, a festive color, the delicate treatment of figures, elegant and refined, and a taste for certain decorative details that become elements of style (for example: the small flowering garlands that adorn the hair of the angels). His principal works are in Perugia: the frescoes of the chapel of the Priors (now in the Pinacoteca), with the Stories of St. Louis and St. Herculanus (1454), treated with a pleasing narrative taste to which the influence of F. Lippi was not extraneous; the Annunciation (Pinacoteca), the Madonna of the Angels (ibid.).
