BOITO, CAMILLO. - Architect, b. in Rome on 30 Oct. 1836, d. in Milan on 28 June 1914. He held the chair of architecture in Venice and in Milan. More important than his professional activity (the Palazzo delle Debite in Padua, the grand staircase of the Palazzo Franchetti in Venice, the restorations of St. Anthony's in Padua, etc.) was his theoretical activity, particularly the study of the problems of restoration, in which, opposing the taste popularized by Viollet-le-Duc, he upheld respect for the artistically valuable remodellings that architectures had undergone in various periods.
Also important was his didactic principle by which he considered necessary, for the formation of the architect, the union of humanistic culture with technical preparation.
Among B.'s writings relating to problems of art are: L'architettura del medioevo in Italia (Milan 1880), Il duomo di Milano (ibid. 1889), Questioni pratiche di belle arti (ibid. 1893, on the problem of restoration).
