BOCCATI, GIOVANNI di PIERMATTEO, known as. - Painter, b. at Camerino about 1420; in 1445 he moved to Perugia, where he is last recorded in 1480. More than from the Marchigian milieu in which his early training took place (he was perhaps a pupil of L. Salimbeni il Giovane), his style derived from the examples of Domenico Veneziano, Filippo Lippi, and Piero della Francesca. From the latter he drew, though implementing it superficially, a taste for vast perspectival backgrounds and for the geometric rigor of compositions. B. was able to impart to his paintings a harmonious festivity of color, whose merit partly makes one forget the elementary nature of the compositions and figures.
His principal works are the Madonna del pergolato (1447, gall. Naz. di Perugia); the Madonna dell'orchestra (ibid.); the polyptych in S. Eustachio at Belforte (1468); and the Madonna e i santi (1473) in Budapest. - See Pl. CIII.
