BOCCACCINO, BOCCACCIO. - Painter, b. in Ferrara in about 1467, d. in Cremona in 1524 or 1525. He completed his first artistic education in his homeland on the examples of Ercole Grandi and Ercole de' Roberti, then, in Venice, he followed Alvise Vivarini and Cima da Conegliano; he derived elements from Costa, from Foppa and from Bramantino, and he underwent the influence of Dürerian motifs.
The major work of B. consists of the frescoes of the cathedral of Cremona (1506: Christ and saints, in the apse; 1515-19: Stories of the Virgin, in the left nave) in which, especially in the typology of the figures, a superficial intervention by Perugino is evident. Among the other paintings of B. are the Marriage of St. Catherine (carried out under the influence of Cima), significant for the balance of the composition and for the splendor of the color; the frescoes of the cathedral of Ferrara, where B. worked with L. Costa and with Grimaldi (1498-99); the Zingarella in the Uffizi. Although not very original, the personality of B. notably influenced contemporary Cremonese painting. A pupil of B. was his son CAMILLO (d. in 1546) who in the same Cremona painted in the Cathedral, imitating Pordenone, and in the apse of S. Sigismondo.
