CANOSSA, Luigi di. — Cardinal. Born in Verona on 30 April 1809, died there on 12 March 1900. In 1873 he entered the Society of Jesus in Rome, remaining there for several years, but finally, on medical advice, he had to leave due to his frail health. He then settled in his native city and was appointed bishop of Verona by Pius IX in 1861. Deeply devoted to his diocese, he begged the Pope—who had designated him as successor to Cardinal Parocchi in the archiepiscopal see of Bologna—not to proceed with the appointment. The Pope consented and, moreover, in the Consistory of 12 March 1877, conferred the cardinal’s hat upon him, with the title of S. Marcello. He attended to the governance of the diocese with great zeal, ever mindful in all his actions of the obligations arising from his episcopal dignity.
