CANOSSA, LUIGI di. — Cardinal, born in Verona on 30 April 1809, died there on 12 March 1900. Having entered the Society of Jesus in Rome in 1837, he remained there for several years, but ultimately, on medical advice, was obliged to leave it because of his frail health. Subsequently settling in his native city, he was appointed bishop of Verona by Pius IX in 1861. Sincerely devoted to his diocese, he implored the Pope, who had designated him to succeed Cardinal Parocchi in the archiepiscopal see of Bologna, not to proceed with this appointment. The Pontiff consented and, moreover, in the Consistory of 12 March 1877, conferred upon him the cardinalitial dignity, with the title of S. Marcello. He devoted himself to the administration of the diocese with great zeal, always keeping in mind, in all his actions, the obligations deriving from his episcopal dignity.
