CANOSSA, LUIGI di. - Cardinal, b. in Verona on 30 April 1809, d. there on 12 March 1900. Having entered the Society of Jesus in Rome in 1837, he remained there for some years, but in the end, on medical advice, he had to leave it because of his frail health. Thereafter settling in his native city, he was appointed in 1861 by Pius IX bishop of Verona. Sincerely attached to his diocese, he implored the Pope, who had designated him as successor to Cardinal Parocchi in the archiepiscopal see of Bologna, not to proceed with that designation. The Pontiff consented and indeed conferred on him, in the Consistory of 12 March 1877, the cardinal's purple, with the title of St. Marcellus. He attended to the government of the diocese with great zeal, having in his every action always present the obligations deriving from his episcopal dignity.
