CARACCIOLO, DIEGO IRIGO. - Cardinal, b. July 18, 1759 at Martina, d. Jan. 24, 1820 at Naples. Master of the chamber to Pius VI, he followed him in 1798 on the road of exile, when he was dragged by the French out of Rome.
He was at the Pontiff's side at Siena, at Florence, at Grenoble and at Valence, and caught his last breaths, also drafting, in his capacity as prothonotary, the authentic document concerning the death of Pius VI. To reward C.'s attachment to his predecessor, Pius VII created him in the Consistory of Aug. 11, 1802 cardinal of the order of priests, of the title of St. Augustine, and subsequently suburbicarian bishop of Palestrina. When Joseph Bonaparte became king of Naples, C. swore allegiance to the new sovereign, but afterwards all his property was confiscated, and only after the return of King Ferdinand IV did he succeed in regaining possession of it. In 1815 the cardinal was entrusted with the negotiations for a new concordat between the Holy See and the kingdom of the Two Sicilies, happily concluded three years later. In the same period he also took an interest in the abolition of the abuses arising from the service of the Neapolitan couriers in pontifical territory.
