CALLEWAERT, CAMILLE. - Liturgist, b. at Zwevegem on 1 Jan. 1866, d. at Bruges on 6 Aug. 1943. Having completed his studies at the seminaries of Roeselare and Bruges, he was ordained priest on 15 June 1889. After taking his degree at the University of Lovanio, he taught sacred liturgy from 1903 at the seminary of Bruges, and from 1910 at the same University of Lovanio.
He presented the results of his studies, always directed beyond mere rubricism toward considering the liturgy in the light of theology and history, in various periodicals, such as the Collationes Brugentes, the Revue bénédictique, and the Éphemerides liturgicae. The Liturgicae Institutiones are his principal work, of which three volumes appeared: De sacra Liturgia universum (1919); De Breviarii Romani liturgia (1931); De Missalis Romani liturgia (1937), of which only the first section, devoted to the material elements of worship, was published; the second part and the two volumes that were to complete the work—the Liturgia del Rituale romano and the Liturgia dell'anno ecclesiastico—remained unpublished because of the author's death.
Many of his liturgical writings published in various journals
are contained in the volume Sacris erudiri (1939), issued on
the fiftieth anniversary of his priesthood.
