Calatrava

Also known as: Knights of Calatrava, Order of Calatrava, Calatrava Order; Spanish: Orden de Calatrava; Latin: Militia Calatravensis, Ordo Calatravensis

CALATRAVA. - Spanish knightly order founded in 1158 by Raymond, Cistercian abbot of Fideiro, entrusted by Sancho III, king of Castile, with the defense of C., besieged by the Moors. For its internal discipline the Cistercian rule was adopted. Alexander III approved it in 1165. From then on it developed greatly both because of the many victories won over the Moors and because of the great possessions it acquired or was granted, but with the 14th century it went into decline because of internal splits. It was reconstituted in 1482 under Ferdinand the Catholic, who became its grand master. From then on it remained united to the Spanish crown.
