ORDER OF ALCÁNTARA. - A chivalric order founded at S. Juliao de Pereyro in 1156, on the initiative of certain knights of Salamanca, headed by D. Suarez Fernández Barrientos, for the purpose of uniting the Spanish nobility in the struggle against the Moors. The knights had to be of authentic nobility and of unblemished life. At first it adopted the Cistercian rule, and it was enriched with many privileges, among them that of depending directly on the Holy See. From the 13th century it had its seat at Alcántara, from which it took its definitive name. In the 16th century the vow of chastity was replaced by that of the defense of the Immaculate Conception. Suppressed with the French occupation, and restored afterward, it was again suppressed by the republic of 1872; but it later rose again by the will of Alfonso XII.
