CAGIN, Paul. - Liturgist, b. at Béthune on 7 June 1847, d. at Solesmes on 8 April 1923. He entered the Benedictine Order in 1879 and was ordained priest in 1885. A tireless worker and bold investigator, he was one of the masters of liturgical science.
Among his works are: Un mot sur l'Antiphone Misarum (Solesmes 1890), concerning the liturgical work of St. Gregory the Great; the publication of an Ambrosian antiphonal in vols. V and VI of the Paléographie Musicale (Solesmes 1896), with comments and fundamental observations on Ambrosian liturgy; the edition of the Ambrosian Sacramentary of Bergamo in the Anciens Solesmes (1900); a study on Latin Eucology: Te Deum ou Ilatio?, contribution à l'histoire de l'Euchologie latine à propos des origines du Te Deum (Solesmes 1906); L'Eucharistie, canon primitif de la Messe ou formulaire essentiel et premier de toutes les liturgies (Paris 1912), a keen dissertation on the formation of the canon, followed by L'Anaphore Apostolique (ibid. 1919), which aroused much criticism; besides numerous articles in various journals.
