CAGIN, PAUL. - Liturgist, b. at Béthune on 7 June 1847, d. at Solesmes on 8 Apr. 1923. Having entered the Benedictine Order in 1879 and been ordained priest in 1885, he was an indefatigable worker and bold investigator, one of the masters of liturgical scholarship.
He was responsible for: Un mot sur l'Antiphonale Missarum (Solesmes 1890), concerning the liturgical work of St Gregory the Great; the publication of an Ambrosian antiphonary, in vols. V and VI of Paléographie Musicale (Solesmes 1896), with commentaries and observations fundamental for the Ambrosian liturgy; the edition of the Bergamo Ambrosian Sacramentary in the Auctarium Solesmense (1900); a study on Eucologia latina: Te Deum ou Illatio?, contribution to the history of Euchologie latine à propos des origines du Te Deum (Solesmes 1906); L'Eucharistie, canon primitif de la Messe ou formulaire essentiel et premier de toutes les liturgies (Paris 1912), a penetrating dissertation on the formation of the canon, followed by L'Anaphore Apostolique (there 1919), which aroused much criticism; as well as numerous articles in various journals.
