CAMERONITES. - A French Calvinist sect that took its name from the Scotsman John Cameron (1577-1625), who, after studying philosophy at Glasgow, moved to Bordeaux in France in 1600. The Reformed Church of that city sent him on its own account to study theology at Geneva and Heidelberg. While he was a professor at Saumur (Maine-et-Loire) he embraced and defended certain Arminian doctrines (v. ARMINO), imitated in this by Moïse Amyraut, from whom the Amyraldists originated; but because of difficulties that subsequently arose he had to return to Scotland, where he remained only a year, moving again to France to the city of Montauban, where it is said that he died during a riot in the year 1625. He wrote the «Theological Lectures».
