CAPECE ZURLO, GIUSEPPE. - Cardinal, born in Naples on Jan. 3, 1711, died there on Dec. 31, 1801. Of a noble family, he entered the Congregation of the Theatines, showing great attachment to the religious life and a deep interest in studies, which he pursued brilliantly up to the attainment of university degrees.
Appointed bishop of Calvi, he was then created cardinal in 1782 and on Dec. 16 of the same year archbishop of Naples. During the events of 1799 he also proved himself a man of action, adopting a resolute attitude even toward the fleeing sovereign, as happened aboard the "Vanguard," when C. urged Ferdinand IV to place himself at the head of his subjects and defend the institutions and traditions of his homeland with weapons in hand. During the Parthenopean Republic C. continued to concern himself especially with the needs of the people, quite apart from any dynastic and political question. For this he was harshly reproached at the Restoration, with consequent exile in the monastery of Montevergine, where he died at the age of 90.
