Cardoso, Jorge

CARDOSO, JORGE. - Portuguese priest and hagiographer, b. in Lisbon on 31 Dec. 1606, d. on 3 Oct. 1669.

A disciple of Fr. Francisco de Macedo, he left us the Agiológio lusitano, compiled on the basis of lengthy research in the archives of the peninsula and in which are treated the history and geography of Portugal, its conquests and the evangelization of the regions subjected to it, and which, in the author's intention, was also to include local traditions and legends. The list of Portuguese saints is distributed over the first four months of the year, and to each of them are devoted an erudite commentary and notes. His other works, not a few of which are manuscript, are L'Ufficio menor dos santos de Portugal (1629), La relaça da fundação do convento da Madre de Deus, etc.
