CARDOSO, Jorge. - Portuguese priest and hagiographer, born in Lisbon on 31 Dec. 1606, died on 3 Oct. 1669.
A disciple of Fr. Francisco de Macedo, he left us the *Agiologio lusitano*, compiled after extensive research in the archives of the Iberian Peninsula, in which he treats the history and geography of Portugal, its conquests, and the evangelization of the subjugated regions; and which, in the author’s intention, was also to include local traditions and legends. The list of Portuguese saints is arranged in the first four months of the year, and each saint is provided with an erudite commentary and notes. Among his other works, several of which remain in manuscript, are *L'Officio menor dos santos de Portugal* (1629) and *La relação da fundação do convento da Madre de Deus*, etc.
