CASTEL VOLTURNO. - It is an ancient diocese of Campania, whose bishop Pascasius at the end of the 5th century is known; the ecclesia vulturniana also reappears in the middle of the 6th century (Jaffé-Wattenbach, p. 981).

The Hieronymian Martyrology on 11 February commemorates in Campania Volturno Castrensis (Acta SS. Novembris, II, II, Brussels 1931, p. 87) a martyr also listed in the calendar of St. Willibrord and in the Neapolitan marble calendar. St. Castrensis, according to his Vita (BHL, I, 1644-45), would have been an African bishop expelled during the Vandal persecution who landed in Campania, and Lanzoni considered him as such. But Delehaye regards him as a greatly venerated local martyr, as attested by his image found near Calvi and the fenestella confessionis found at Volturno and preserved in the museum of Capua.
