CATHOLIC HERALD, THE. – English Catholic weekly, founded in 1884 by Charles Diamond (d. 1934), with an explicitly social character. The strongly polemical tone imparted to it by Diamond, its editor until his death, won the newspaper a large following, which nevertheless subsequently declined. A broader orientation has been given to the C. H. by its new proprietors, with the aim of making it an organ dealing with general topics and events from a Catholic point of view.
