Chefneux, Mathieu

CHEFNEUX, MATHIEU. - Augustinian scholar, b. in Liège in the early years of the 17th century, d. ca. 1670. He was prior in the Augustinian convent of his native city, a prolific orator, humble and so disdainful of academic degrees that he never wished to be awarded any. He was noted for his biblical and historical erudition, which he used to defend the Church against the Protestants and to incite men to Christian heroism.

Among his writings, the voluminous work deserves mention: Speculum chronographicum Ecclesiae catholicae ab origine mundi ad nos usque (3 vols., Liège 1662-1670).
