CHEFNEUX, MATHIEU. — Augustinian scholar, b. in Liège in the early years of the 17th century, d. c. 1670. He was superior of the Augustinian convent in his native city, a prolific orator, and so humble and dismissive of academic degrees that he never accepted any. He distinguished himself for his biblical and historical erudition, which he employed to defend the Church against Protestants and to inspire Christian heroism.
Among his writings, the voluminous work deserves mention: *Speculum chronographicum Ecclesiae catholicae ab origine mundi ad nos usque* (3 vols., Liège 1662–1670).
