CHERUBINO da AVIGLIANA, blessed. — A Piedmontese Augustinian, originally from the Testa family, b. at Avigliana in 1451 and d. there on 17 September 1479. He distinguished himself by his piety and obedience and by his ardent devotion to the Crucified. Special mention should be made of his angelic purity, which he preserved unsullied throughout his life. After his death, according to a local tradition, the sound of the bells, untouched by any human hand, announced the passage of his soul to heaven, and his body gave off the fragrance of lilies for a long time. The cult of blessed C., which remained alive through the centuries, was confirmed by Pius IX on 21 September 1865. His feast is celebrated on 20 February.
