SOLAR CYCLE. - È il nome dato impropriamente a un periodo di 28 anni solari (latino circulus solis, francese cycle solaire, tedesco Sonnenzyklus), trascorso il quale la successione dei giorni della settimana torna a corrispondere esattamente alle lettere domenicali A-G, date convenzionalmente all'ordine progressivo dei giorni della settimana che aprono l'anno.If, for example, a given year begins on a Sunday, calling A January 1, B January 2, C January 3, etc., the series A-G (Sunday-Saturday) will again correspond to the days January 1-7 after 28 years. The solar cycle, which in reality is not related to the course of the sun, was used extensively in the Middle Ages for the direct determination of the "dominical letter" (v.) and for the computation of Easter.
