Cinnamon

CINNAMOMO

Also known as: Greek: kinnamomon; Latin: Cinnamomum zeylanicum

CINNAMON (Heb. Qinnāmōn, Greek κυνάμωμον). - An aromatic element of the anointing oil (Ex. 30:23). It is often joined in enumeration with other perfumes, such as cassia, myrrh, aloes. Because of the rare excellence of this perfume, the bride of Cant. 4:14, and the divine Wisdom in Eccl. 24:20, are compared to cinnamon. True cinnamon is extracted from the aromatic plant Cinnamomum zeylanicum, abundant on the island of Ceylon. The ancients, who were ignorant of this plant, perhaps understood by this name the cassia nigra or cinnamon of China (cassia?).
