Clarembald of Abras

CLAREMBALDO DI ABRAS

CLAREMBALD OF ABRAS. - A disciple of Thierry of Chartres (v.), of whom there is known so far an extensive commentary on Boethius' De Trinitate, written around 1153 (cf. ed. W. Jansen, Breslau 1926). In it C. remains faithful to the exaggerated realism of his master, admitting for all men one single and identical humanity and expressly opposing certain "famosi doctores" (that is, Gilbert de la Porrée and his school) who attributed individual humanities to individual men. Noteworthy in the commentary, however, is the recourse to Aristotle, especially for physical theories; C. accepts, like Thierry, the composition of matter and form, so that extreme pantheism can be avoided.
