CHRISTIAN III, King of Denmark. - B. 12 Aug. 1503 at Gottorp, d. 1 Jan. 1559 at Kolding. Because of disagreements that arose in the Rigsraad he did not become king immediately upon the death of his father Frederick I (1533), but the war begun by Lübeck for control of the Danish straits opened the way to the throne for him: thus C. began his reign in 1536. His sympathies for Lutheranism drove him to follow the same path as Gustav I Vasa, king of Sweden: the confiscation of ecclesiastical property, a measure judged necessary given the grave economic and financial crisis in which the country was struggling. The king thus found himself in conflict with Charles V, who supported the deposed C. II: only with the Peace of Speyer (1544) did the Emperor undertake to grant no further support to the former Danish sovereign. - See plate LVII.
