CHRISTIAN I, King of DENMARK. – Born 21 May 1426 at Copenhagen, died 21 May 1481. He succeeded to the throne of Christopher of Bavaria and was King of Denmark from 1448 and of Norway from 1450. He also ruled in Sweden from 1457 to 1471. Elected Duke of Schleswig and Holstein in 1460, CHRISTIAN effected the personal union of the two duchies with Denmark. In 1474 he came to Rome. In 1479 he founded the University of Copenhagen with the approval of Sixtus IV so that Danish clergy might pursue their studies at home rather than in Germany or France. – V. tav. LVII.
