CRISTIANO I, king of DANIMARCA. - B. on 21 May 1426 in Copenaghen, d. there on 21 May 1481. He succeeded Cristoforo di Baviera to the throne and was king of Danimarca from 1448 and of Norvegia from 1450. He also reigned in Svezia from 1457 to 1471. Elected duke of Schleswig and Holstein in 1460, C. effected the personal union of the two duchies with Danimarca. In 1474 he came to Rome. In 1479 he founded the University of Copenaghen with the approval of Sisto IV, in order to give Danish priests the possibility of completing their education in their own country rather than in Germania or Francia. - See pl.
