CRUSIUS (KRAUSS), MARTIN. - German Protestant philologist and historian, b. near Bamberg on 19 Sept. 1526, d. 14 Feb. 1607 at Tübingen, where he was professor of moral philosophy and of Greek.
Besides his works on the Greek and Latin classics, the following are preserved by him: Corona anni, hoc est, explicatio Evangeliorum et Epistolarum in diebus dominicis et festis graece et latine (Wittenberg 1603); Homiliae hymnodicae, quatuor et quinquaginta cantica ecclesiae lutheranae bene disposita (Arnstadt 1705); Annales suevici (2 vols. in-fol., Frankfurt 1594-96), a highly esteemed but rare work. In 1927 W. Göz and E. Conrad published the Diarium M. Crusii 1596-97.
Of C. one should recall an attempt, unsuccessful, to win the Greeks over to Protestantism, and the correspondence maintained for this purpose with the patriarch of Constantinople Jeremiah II.
