CHRISTADELPHIANS (BROTHERS OF CHRIST). - A Protestant sect founded by the Englishman John Thomas. In 1884, having moved to the United States, after long studies of the Bible he became convinced that the principal doctrines of all the sects and Churches then existing were those of the apostateChurch, foretold in Holy Scripture, and that therefore one had to return to the doctrines, precepts and practices of the primitive Church, it being sufficient for this to observe what the Bible says. He therefore devoted himself to an active propaganda to «extract from the Gentiles a people that would glorify the name of God».
During the American Civil War (1861-66), Thomas's followers took the name of C. They are anti-Trinitarian; according to them, the soul is by nature mortal and immortality is granted only to the righteous; Jesus Christ is soon to come personally to earth to raise the dead and establish his kingdom in Jerusalem with the 12 tribes reunited. His kingdom is to last 1000 years, after which there would be the second resurrection, and then the righteous will be rewarded with eternal life and the wicked with eternal death (that is, with annihilation). This sect has about 4000 adherents and has missions in Germany, France, Norway and in some other parts of Europe.
