CUNHA, RODRIGO da. – Portuguese historiographer, bishop of Portalegre (1615) and of Oporto (1619), and finally archbishop of Braga (1623) and Lisbon (1636), born in Lisbon in 1577, died there in 1643. After the revolution of 1640, he was governor of the Kingdom until the arrival of the Braganzas.
His fundamental work remains the Historia eclesiástica da Igreja de Lisboa, vida e acções de seus prelados e varões eminentes (2 vols., Lisbon 1642), which covers the period from the foundation of the city to the episcopate of Martino, murdered during the disturbances provoked by the death of Ferdinando I. He is also responsible for a Historia eclesiástica of Braga (Braga 1634–35).
