CUNHA, RODRIGO da. - Portuguese historian, bishop of Portalegre (1615) and of Oporto (1619) and finally archbishop of Braga (1623) and Lisbon (1636), b. in Lisbon in 1577, d. there in 1643. After the revolution of 1640, he was governor of the Kingdom until the arrival of the Braganzas.

His fundamental work remains the Historia eclesiástica da Igreja de Lisboa, vida e acções de seus prelados e varões eminentes (2 vols., Lisbon 1642), which goes from the founding of the city to the episcopate of Martin, murdered during the tumults provoked by the death of Ferdinand I. He is also owed a Historia eclesiástica of Braga (Braga 1634-35).
