DALMASIO LIPPO. — Also called L. delle Madonne; Bolognese painter, b. around 1352, d. between 1410 (the date of his will) and 1421 (the year in which his heirs are mentioned), son of D. di Jacopo Scannabechi, also a painter, and nephew of Simone dei Crocifissi. He was a follower of the art of Vitale da Bologna, to which he added Tuscan and, more specifically, Pistoian elements, attributable to the painter’s stay in that city from 1580 to 1584.
He executed several images of the Virgin with the Child, including the much-retouched one in the London picture gallery, the Madonna (called del velluto) in S. Domenico in Bologna, the graceful Madonna in the church of the Misericordia, dated 1397, and that in S. Benedetto in the same city. At the Pii istituti educativi di Bologna there is a large triptych with the Madonna in trono e santi, an early work very close to Simone dei Crocifissi. The Bolognese picture gallery preserves a signed Madonna dell'umiltà and a small Incoronazione della Vergine, part of a dismembered altarpiece. Various sacred images frescoed on the walls of houses in Bologna, now destroyed by time, are also attributed to him.
