CRETI, DONATO. - Painter and engraver, b. in Cremona on 24 Feb. 1677, d. in Bologna on 29 Jan. 1749. He worked mostly in the latter city, where he learned the first elements of painting from Lorenzo Pasinelli.

The earlier Bolognese artistic tradition found in him a good continuator, as attested by the large canvases depicting St. Vincent Ferrer preaching to a child (heavily retouched) in St. Dominic's in Bologna; The Virgin in Glory Venerated by St. Ignatius and St. Charles Succoring the Poor (executed by him in his last years), both in the church of St. Peter in Bologna. Other works by C. are found in the sanctuary of St. Luke, near Bologna, in the picture gallery and in the municipal collections of the same city, as well as in some churches of Bergamo, Rimini and Lucca. The elegance of his figures and the refinement of his color show analogies with 18th-century French painting. He had various pupils, among them: Francesco L'Ange, Carlo Giovannini and Ercole Graziani the younger.
