DANIEL, CHARLES. - Jesuit, writer, b. at Beauvais on 31 Dec. 1818; d. at Paris on 1 Jan. 1893. In 1857, with the assistance of Fr. Ivan Gagarin, he founded the periodical Etudes de théologie et d'histoire and directed it until 1870, when his weakened eyesight prevented him from doing so.
Besides the many articles contributed to the journal, the following also deserve mention: Des études classiques dans la société chrétienne (Paris 1853), in defence of classical studies against the exaggerated assertions of Abbé G. Gaume; Histoire de la b. Marguér. Marie et des origines de la dévotion au S. Coeur (ibid. 1865); Les jésuites instituteurs de la jeunesse française au XVIIe et XVIIIe siècle (ibid. 1880). A collection of his important writings, preceded by a biography, was published under the title: Questions actuelles : Religion, Philosophie, Histoire, Art et Littérature (ibid. 1895).
