CHARLES DANIEL. – Jesuit, writer, b. at Beauvais on 31 Dec. 1818; d. in Paris on 1 Jan. 1893. In 1857, with the collaboration of Fr. Ivan Gagarin, he founded the periodical *Études de théologie et d’histoire* and edited it until 1870, when his failing eyesight prevented him from continuing.
Besides the many articles he contributed to the review, noteworthy are: *Des études classiques dans la société chrétienne* (Paris 1853), a defence of classical studies against the exaggerated claims of Abbé G. Gaume; *Histoire de la bienheureuse Marguerite-Marie et des origines de la dévotion au Sacré-Cœur* (ibid. 1865); *Les jésuites instituteurs de la jeunesse française au XVIIe et XVIIIe siècle* (ibid. 1880). A collection of his important writings, prefaced by a biography, was published under the title *Questions actuelles : Religion, Philosophie, Histoire, Art et Littérature* (ibid. 1895).
