DE ANGELIS, FRANCESCO ANTONIO. - Jesuit, missionary, b. in Naples in 1566, d. at Calleà on 21 Oct. 1622. Sent to Ethiopia, he was first superior at Fremona (1604), whence in 1611 he moved to Goggiam, to the brother of the king, Se' elà Crestós, whom he confirmed in the faith and who placed in him so much trust and affection as to make him governor of the recently conquered Agaumeder. Among the Agau, still pagans, he succeeded in founding a school and a church. Through a fall into the Adia river he contracted an illness that led him to his death.

An expert connoisseur of the Agau, Amharic and Ethiopic languages, he translated into the latter the gospels of Mark, Luke and John; the commentary of Fr. B. Pereira on Genesis, of Fr. G. Maldonado on the gospels and of Fr. B. Viegas on the Apocalypse.
