FRANCESCO ANTONIO DE ANGELIS. - Jesuit, missionary, b. in Naples in 1566, d. at Callea on 21 Oct. 1622. Sent to Ethiopia, he was first superior at Fremona (1604), whence in 1611 he went to Goggiam, to the brother of the king, Se' elà Crestós, whom he confirmed in the faith and who placed such great trust and affection in him that he made him governor of the recently conquered Aguameder. Among the still pagan Agau, he succeeded in founding a school and a church. After falling into the Adia river, he contracted an illness that led to his death.
An expert in the Agau, Amharic and Ethiopian languages, he translated into the latter the Gospels of Mark, Luke and John; the commentary of Fr. B. Pereira on the Book of Joshua, that of Fr. G. Maldonado on the Gospels and that of Fr. B. Viegas on the Apocalypse.
