DE BAETS, MAURICE. – Theologian, born in Ghent on 17 April 1863, died there on 19 September 1931. After obtaining a degree in theology at the Gregorian University, he taught dogmatic theology at the University of Louvain from 1896 to 1906. Upon returning to Ghent, he held important offices there.
Of brilliant and independent intellect, he adhered to the fundamental ideas of Thomism, which he developed in the works: Les bases de la morale et du droit (Louvain 1892); De ratione et natura peccati originalis (there 1899); De Gratia Christi (there 1901); Questiones de operationibus divinis quae respiciunt creaturas (there 1903); De libera Christi obedientia (there 1905); De Sacramentis in genere (there 1907). He published many apologetic works in Flemish.
