DE BAETS, MAURICE. - Theologian, b. at Ghent 17 Apr. 1863, d. there 19 Sept. 1931. Having earned a degree in theology from the Gregorian University, he taught dogmatic theology at the University of Louvain from 1896 to 1906. Returning to Ghent, he held delicate positions there.
Of brilliant and original mind, he adhered to the fundamental ideas of Thomism, which he developed in the following works: *Les bases de la morale et du droit* (Louvain 1892); *De ratione et natura peccati originalis* (ibid. 1899); *De Gratia Christi* (ibid. 1901); *Quaestiones de operationibus divinis quae respiciunt creaturas* (ibid. 1903); *De libera Christi oboedientia* (ibid. 1905); *De Sacramentis in genere* (ibid. 1907). He also published many apologetic works in Flemish.
