DANISI, IGNAZIO (IGNAZIO DELLA CROCE). - Augustinian theologian, b. at Castellaneta (Taranto) in 1717, d. at Naples on 29 Jan. 1784. Definitor and restorer of the Order, he founded the Accademia Aletina (celebrated by Muratori, Metastasio, Mazzocchi) to defend and exalt the Immaculate Conception. He was professor of dogmatics at the University of Naples.

He published various oratorical and theological works, among them: Dissertazione sullo schiaffo e il pannolino che si usa nella Confermazione (ibid. 1758); Revelatae religionis vindiciae (Naples 1773); De veritate religionis christianae (ibid. 1776); De Deo Gratiae anctore (ibid. 1782). He deserves credit for having vigorously upheld the objective criteria (miracle and prophecy) of divine Revelation against the naturalism and deism of the eighteenth century.
