DANISI, Ignazio (Ignatio della Croce). — Augustinian theologian, born in Castellaneta (Taranto) in 1717, died in Naples on 29 January 1784. Definitor and restorer of the Order, he founded the Accademia Altena (illustrated by Muratori, Metastasio, Mazzocchi) to defend and exalt the Immaculate Conception. He was professor of dogmatic theology at the University of Naples.
He published various oratorical and theological works, including: *Dispersazione sullo schiaffo e il pannolino che si usa nella Con- fermazione* (ibid. 1758); *Revelata religionis vindiciae* (Naples 1773); *De veritate religionis christianae* (ibid. 1776); *De Deo Gratiae auctore* (ibid. 1782). He deserves credit for having vigorously affirmed the objective criteria (miracle and prophecy) of divine Revelation against the naturalism and deism of the 18th century.
